![]() Despite Rick’s final sidekick gig occurring 40 years ago, and his ascension to heroic mantles of his own such as A-Bomb, Abomination, and Whisperer, he is still widely labeled as Marvel’s most important sidekick.įor twenty-eight years, the heroes of Marvel Comics pursued their exploits of justice without the aid of sidekicks, until writer Dan Slott introduced the character of Alpha in 2012 to issues of the Amazing Spider-Man. This status quo lasted through Stan Lee’s transition from writer/editor to publisher, and lasted 13 years, until Captain Marvel’s death. The following year, Roy Thomas depicted Rick becoming a sidekick once more to the Kree hero Captain Marvel. Whether Stan acknowledged this as well is unknown, but in 1968 Rick irrefutably became Captain America’s new sidekick, taking on the role of “Bucky.” Curiously, Stan Lee wrote several of the Captain America issues during this period, and even when Rick left the mantle in one such issue, he manages to mysteriously avoid Stan’s deadly wrath. Though Rick originated as simply the Hulk’s best friend, fans of Marvel Comics unanimously consider him to have quickly become the not-so-jolly green giant’s sidekick. Rick originated as a supporting character from the Hulk’s debut issue in 1962, co-created by Stan Lee himself. With Stan stepping away from regular duties at Marvel during the 1990s, both characters have since returned to life in more modern comics in the 2000s, but as older independent heroes in their own right, a far cry from their conceptions.Īnother important noteworthy individual when discussing sidekicks is Rick Jones. Due to his stance on sidekicks, Stan swiftly depicted the deaths of Toro and Bucky four years later in Sub-Mariner #14 and Avengers #4 respectively. During the 1960s though, Stan Lee gained a vast amount of creative freedom due to his conception of the Fantastic Four in 1961, which quickly became a runaway hit. In 1940, two years after Stan Lee was hired as a 16-year-old editorial assistant for Timely Comics, Marvel’s predecessor, Thomas Raymond hit the scene as the original Human Torch’s teenage sidekick Toro, followed quickly by Bucky Barnes debuting alongside Captain America as his sidekick. Admittedly, Robin was conceived to attract a younger audience, but the fact remains that adding him to the Detective Comics title doubled the comic’s sales, and for that I partially attribute to the storytelling opportunities his creation allowed for, again referenced in last week’s article.ĭespite Stan Lee’s feelings toward the topic of sidekicks, an irrefutable fact is that whether he likes it or not, they have had representation within Marvel Comics’ continuity. In last month’s article, I showcased examples of such richness using Robin, the first and arguably most well-known sidekick in all of comics. DC, no stranger to the concept of sidekicks, perfectly exemplifies the richness they can add to a reader’s experience. I understand and accept Stan Lee’s aversion to sidekicks in the Marvel Universe, but I feel that it is past time the company dip its toes into the lucrative business of such teenage understudies to the superhero line of work. My publisher insisted I include teenagers in my series, because they always felt teenagers won’t read the books unless there’s a teenager in the stories which is nonsense.” His sentiments on the concept of sidekicks, which he refers to as a cliché, is clear.
